Panama’s Torrijos-Carter Viaduct inaugurated

The new viaduct interconnects the section of the Cinta Costera 3 with the touristic zone of Calzada de Amador, an investment of nearly $45 million.

The new 1.56 kilometer long sea bridge is named ‘Torrijos-Carter’ after General Omar Torrijos and former US President James Carter, both signatories of the treaties that returned the Canal and adjacent lands to the Republic of Panama.

The project goal is to improve the fluidity of vehicular traffic towards the Amador sector, which in return could potentially have a positive impact on the economy growth and job creation.

The population of Panama City will also benefit from the new road by facilitating access to the Amador Convention Center (a popular spot for events and concerts), the cruise port, Biomuseo and leisure activities in the area, including viewpoints and green areas. It also represents a relief from the access road to the Bridge of the Americas.

According to the Minister of Public Works, Rafael Sabonge, the project was built with 70% of the labor of residents of El Chorrillo and Curundú. He also said that it connects the populous neighborhood of El Chorrillo with what was a former military base occupied by the United States military.
