The Tocumen Airport is planning an expansion for the air terminal which will include the construction of a third runway and between 8 and 10 boarding gates. The newly build terminal 2 has failed to meet the high demand after only two years of operation.
The construction of the third runway will have an estimated cost of between $800,000 and $1.2 million, and it is intended to improve connectivity between terminals and manage flights to new destinations more efficiently.
In addition, the administration is working on the possibility of incorporating new destinations of high relevance, in terms of tourism and commerce, such as London. And also the possibility of reaching agreements with British Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways, in order to consolidate Panama as the Hub of the Americas.
According to the Planning and Strategy Department of Tocumen International Airport, the month of July 2024 was particularly noteworthy, with a movement of 1,724,626 users, representing a significant increase of 158,140 passengers compared to the same month last year. Of this total, 69% corresponded to transfer traffic, reaffirming the importance of Tocumen as a key connection point in America.
