about Mata oscuraBeach
Mata Oscura is a beach with strong waves, located south of the district of Mariato, in Veraguas. Its tropical waters and sands are the appropriate place for the nesting of four of the seven species of sea turtles.
The community of the same name is one of the most biodiverse and perhaps little known destinations in the Panamanian Pacific coastal zone.
One of the attractions that makes this secluded place very special and interesting is the longest nesting season of the Pacific sea turtles: olive ridley, hawksbill, channel and green turtles, all catalogued with a degree of threat by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).per season, this area receives between 200 to 500 visitors, including tourists, educational tours and families, who intend to discover the Turtle Route. There you can observe chelonians at night, release them in the morning and do some sightseeing tours during the day.
The Mata Oscura beach, with an extension of four kilometers, becomes every year a nesting paradise for sea turtles.
To this beach comes the channel turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the largest in the world, which can reach up to two meters long and is in 'critical' danger of extinction throughout the eastern Pacific, 'mainly because of industrial fishing', explained Jacinto Rodríguez Murillo, president of the Water and Land Foundation (Fundat). The turtle defender remarked that the channel turtle, as well as the hawksbill, are almost extinct species, and therefore deserve all protection.various factors, such as poaching, accidental fishing, egg collection for human consumption, coastal changes and sea pollution have put the existence of sea turtles at risk.
