About Santa Fe

Santa Fe is a small, authentic village located in the highlands of Panama, surrounded by the rainforest of Santa Fe National Park to the north and the Ngabe Comarca to the west. In the hills around the village, family farms with coffee plantations participate in the Santa Fe Coffee Cooperative.

The town itself is one of the oldest communities in Panama, founded in 1557 by Captain Francisco Vasquez to support extensive gold mining on the coast. The historic trail at Chilagre follows the Santa Maria River through the Santa Fe National Park to the abandoned mines.

There are small, traditional communities in the hills near Santa Fe. They are connected by roads and 4×4 trails. Exploring these rural roads on foot or horseback is a fantastic way to explore the area and enjoy the mountain scenery. Panama's third longest river, the Santa Maria River, flows through the town of Santa Fe, with beautiful swimming and bathing spots.

Santa Fe National Park surrounds the town, covering over 700 square kilometers of primary forest with dozens of waterfalls and hundreds of species of birds, butterflies and orchids, and even more to discover! Trekking to the top of Cerro Mariposa and Cerro Tutey exploring Bermejo waterfalls, Alto de Piedra, and trekking in remote areas are beautiful destinations within the park. Outside the National Park, impressive waterfalls include Golondrinas Falls, a series of small but lovely falls in the community of El Salto and El Chorrillon, to the south.

Following 33, north for an hour, you will cross Santa Fe National Park and enter the newest park in Panama - Hector Gallegos National Park. There are no facilities in the park, but you can enjoy the views.

At the end of route 33, on the coast of Santa Fe, you will reach the Caribbean beaches.
