ABOUT TORIO
Torio, in the Mariato District of the Province of Veraguas, is a small beach front village and community of what was once just fishermen and a few families that dedicated to agricultural activities on their small farms.
Today, thanks to its beautiful beaches, fun waves for surfing, great fishing off the Azuero coastline, and the amazing sunset views over the Pacific Ocean, Torio has grown with an influx of North American and European expats who now call Torio home.
The majority of the expat residents in Torio are environmentally conscious people who enjoy living in a tropical paradise surrounded by nature, plentiful rivers, beautiful waterfalls, and abundant birds & wildlife.
Over 15 years ago, the developers of Torio Hills purchased over 600 hectares of heavily degraded cattle land, which has gradually been transformed into a lush tropical jungle, where a new generation of dreamers and entrepreneurs are exploring methods to create a different and more sustainable lifestyle.
Torio is a virgin refuge for those seeking to create homesteads, retirement homes, small tourism businesses, sustainable organic agriculture, and many other activities, which has transformed it into an eclectic mix of exotic people, in an underdeveloped place with great abundance of natural beauty.
The topography of Torio is unique, as it is a small picturesque valley surrounded by large then gradually small hills with a diverse tropical jungle, a healthy number of creeks and a beautiful river that gracefully flows into the Pacific Ocean.
The hills of Torio are along the Western coastline of the Azuero Peninsula, where its residents and visitors can enjoy some of the most unique and most beautiful, unobstructed sunset views over the Pacific Ocean.
Torio also offers a diverse set of activities, from great hiking through its many rivers, waterfalls and gravel roads and paths, to surfing world class waves at Playa Morrillo or Playa Reina just 20 minutes down the Azuero coast, to world class fishing off of Cebaco Island just 30 minutes offshore. Horseback riding, mountain biking, and bird watching are also among the favorites of visitors and residents of Torio.
With a newly paved asphalt road from Torio to the InterAmerican Highway (at Santiago City), access to Torio is relatively easy with just a 1 hour drive to all major shopping malls and conveniences. For basic banking and shopping needs, the small town of Mariato is just a 20 minute drive away.
For those who enjoy dining, Torio offers a growing number of small restaurants and eateries, each owner operated and each with their own unique style and flavors. When you visit or live in Torio, the business owners will warmly welcome you as a part of the community.
As with anywhere on the Pacific central coast of Panama, Torio has a tropical environment and weather, with two seasons, dry or wet. From December to May is the dry season when it rarely rains, with temperatures ranging from 75 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with North winds being predominantly offshore, and the ocean becomes crystal clear. From May to November is wet season with temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with South winds being predominantly onshore, and the ocean tends to become a bit more murky with the rivers flowing. The lush tropical jungles surrounding Torio make it slightly cooler than most other highly deforested areas like Pedasi or Playa Venao.
With the growth of tourism in Panama, Torio has established itself as a getaway for nature loving tourists who enjoy visiting the waterfalls, hiking through the lush jungles and rivers, surfing the amazing waves of Playa Morrillo and Playa Reina, as well as reeling in the fish off of Cebaco Island. Short term rental homes are readily available and stay fairly busy during high season months of December to April, while the low season is less busy yet still has a steady flow of visitors.
For those seeking adventure, raw nature, beauty and tranquility, Torio is a great choice for real estate investment.
