Access: Getting to the property is easy, the road is perfectly new and fully asphalted all the way from the Pan-American Highway in Santiago to the entrance to the Morrillo Pacific Heights community gate. From Panama City, it is a 3-hour drive to the small City of Santiago (Province of Veraguas), and from there it is about a 1.5 -2-hour drive to the property (+/-5-hour total drive). You can also fly from Panama City (Albrook Airport) to Santiago City on a private charter flight and then rent a car or taxi from there. Contact me for details on charter flight operators.
Beaches: The nearest beach to the property is Playa Mata Oscura, which is a dark sand beach famous for its turtle nesting activities. There is also a river mouth at the end of the beach with a port called "Puerto Nance" where there are sport fishing boats ready to take you sport fishing off the coast of the Western Azuero Peninsula and Cebaco Island. From the property to the Mata Oscura beach is only about 1 km in distance, in fact, it is so close by that from the house you can hear the waves crashing on the shore. The next closest beach is Playa Morrillo, about 10 km up the road towards the village of Torio. Playa Morrillo is famous for its amazing waves for surfing. Surfing enthusiasts from all over the world visit Playa Morrillo for surfing this incredible beach break offering powerful and big surf with amazing tube rides for experienced surfers. Playa Torio is a 15–20-minute drive. Playa Reina is a 30–40-minute drive where you will find a nice easy point break and river mouth for surfing.
Shopping, Restaurants and More: The nearest small supermarket is the Bramador in the village of Quebro, about 9 km from the property, there you can find the Bramador restaurant and gas station. You can also go the opposite direction to Playa Morrillo and Punta Duarte where there are a few hotels and small eateries. At the village of Torio, about 15 km from the property, you will find several restaurants, a few shops and hotels. And finally, at Mariato, the main town and commercial center of the Western Azuero Peninsula area, you will find many restaurants, a few hotels at Playa Reina, shops, larger supermarkets, banks, hardware stores, hospital, pharmacy, Municipal government offices, police, and many other services.
Activities: The Western Azuero Peninsula area is famous for its abundant waterfalls. This area is surrounded with nature, rivers and several waterfalls that are close by within a short drive and hike. With the Cerro Hoya National Park nearby, there is abundant wildlife, all kinds of birds, iguanas, monkeys and other animals frequent this area, offering great hiking and bird watching opportunities. Many visitors also come to this area for the amazing sport fishing activities that are offered off of the long Western Azuero coastline and multiple nearby islands such as Isla Cebaco, as well as the world-famous Hannibal Bank off the tip of the Coiba National Marine Park, which is a 3-hour boat ride from the Western Azuero Peninsula. The surfers also enjoy surfing the nearby beach break of Playa Morrillo on small to medium swells and surfing the point break and river mouth of Playa Reina in the town of Mariato on larger swells.
Healthcare: Public healthcare in Panama is mainly free (in some cases there are minimal costs). The nearest small public hospital and emergency care facility is in the town of Mariato, about a 30 - 40-minute drive from the property. There is a larger public hospital and another private hospital in the city of Santiago, about 1.5-2 hours drive from the property. For major healthcare needs, you would need to go to Panama City (5-hour drive), where you will find world class health facilities at the Panama Clinic and the John Hopkins Hospital at Punta Pacifica.
Schools: Currently there are only public schools offered in this area up to high school (12th grade) at the town of Mariato. Mata Oscura, Torio, and Malena each have local public elementary schools, up to grade 6. Public education in Panama is in Spanish (English is also taught but very minimal) and is free and open to both locals and foreigners who are residents. Most expats who live in the area use online home school platforms for their children.
